Massey Band Identity

Massey, an emerging indie band, captivates audiences with their unique blend of acoustic folk, Americana, and soulful ballads. Their EP, featuring tracks like "Christopher," "Sowing Season," "Memoir and Plea," and "Texas," showcases their rich guitar melodies, poignant lyrics, and authentic vocals, while exploring themes of family, growth, nostalgia, and human connection.

For Massey's unique sound and rich, layered harmonies, I envisioned visuals that captured a blend of rustic charm and modern aesthetics.

The Brief

The project aimed to create a comprehensive identity system for the indie band Massey, including a logo, brand mark and style guide, for use in merchandise and album covers. The client sought a modern, sleek, and mature look that preserved elements from their previous logo, specifically the triangle and the letter "M." The new identity system features beautiful, strong typography, representing the band's soul—honest, stylish, welcoming, inventive, with touches of nostalgia, romance, sorrow, and hope.

The Process

We began by completing a discovery exercise that I created to get to know the band a bit better, including questions like if you had to describe your organization in one word, what would it be and why? and if your brand were a person, how would you describe their personality? These exercises are always illuminating and a lot of fun for me (and I think for the client as well) as we dialogue about their brand. From there, I began concepting different directions for Massey’s new identity, and came up with 4 that I thought were contenders to present to the client. The presentation included the logo marks and variations, as well as suggested color pallets. The band was stoked with all of the options and the final that you see below came after one round of revisions.
